II – Creative Choices

Spend your weekend photographing running horses, a cowboy in action, western-style action riding, a beautiful model with horse and more with a National Geographic published professional photographer…

Creative Choices: Powerful Images – Horse Photography

September 10-11 2011, Petaluma California

We will meet at the privately owned 150 acre Rockin H Ranch right along the Petaluma River. This is a unique property that provides not only convenient meeting space but access to nature, Victorian architecture, an award winning vineyard, and beautiful horses on a working ranch.

Class Overview

Great photographs are created with intention, not simply taken.

This practical, hands-on workshop teaches intermediate photographers to make the smart and creative decisions for consistently powerful images. Working with a professional in a small group, you will explore how to make more compelling compositions. While the Creative Control workshop is aimed at teaching camera control, this weekend we assume you already know how to handle your camera controls and want to go beyond the technical hurdles of photography and focus on more clearly expressing your vision as a photographer.

Class size is limited to 8 students.

More details on this unique class

We’ll work together to explore the decision process behind compelling images. Avoiding the all-too-common ‘spray and pray’ approach to digital photography, I will challenge you to study your subject before you press the shutter button. Slow down, engage not just your eyes but your mind and heart, and stretch yourself as an artist.

This is the difference between looking and seeing.

While best suited for digital SLR photographers, (e.g. Canon Rebel, Nikon D40, etc), there are no restrictions about which camera you use. Most participants find normal to mid-range telephoto lenses are appropriate for our subjects (50-200mm). While we won’t specifically cover camera controls, we will touch on ways to maximize your equipment.

What’s included

A mix of classroom discussion in a comfortable and fun airplane hanger balanced with photography sessions in beautiful locations. We will have the opportunity to photography horses in action, calm horse portraits, western style riders, a professional model with horse, and some other surprises.

I’ve spent an enormous amount of time writing and refining a a workbook for you which explains the most important aspects of using your DSLR to create powerful images. From camera controls to compositional decisions, VISIONS Vol.1 Creative Control: Master your Digital SLR is an efficient and rich resource. This workbook is included in the cost of the class.

Bonus – I’m extending my availability to students of this class by offering a follow-up portfolio review. Post-workshop I will review up to ten of your images via email, with detailed notes on the shots and suggestions for how to take your work to the next level. This is a $75-100 value, and is included in the price of this class.

Testimonials

I learned more in your 2 day class than I did in another 5 day class. I really enjoyed the workshop and your easy, hands-on approach to seeing through the eye of the camera. -Rachelle S., San Miguel de Allende

Thanks for a great workshop – I learned a lot! I really appreciate your thoroughness, interesting teaching style, and enthusiasm. If you ever schedule a follow-up workshop here in San Miguel, you can count on me to sign up. – Gail T., San Miguel de Allende

Jak is an outstanding teacher able to clearly explain what one needs to know to create fine images.  The balance of in-class talk and in-the-field practice is perfect: the days fly by. The detailed handout is invaluable for future reference. I highly recommend this fun and informative workshop offered by a patient, knowledgeable, enthusiastic photographer! – Sandra S. Mill Valley

The location, class size, and format were perfect. We spent 97% of our time with our camera in hand, not a pen and paper. You explained a key concept or two, how you would use them, why they are important to a photograph and then we went out and practiced… You didn’t tell us the best angle for a photo, you guided us through the decision making process. Just watching you and your approach to the photo subjects was a learning experience in itself… It was a terrific weekend for me. I was sad to see it end.  Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise but especially for changing my perspective! – Victor C.
