More details on this unique class
This class is aimed at the beginning to intermediate amateur using any type of digital SLR camera. (e.g. Canon Rebel, Nikon D40, etc). While you can often get good photographs with your camera’s automatic settings, I will teach you to consistently take excellent shots. You’ll learn to get correct exposure every time, control shutter speed to freeze and blur action, control aperture to creatively select depth of field, and turn all your photographic choices into vision-serving tools.
This is a hands-on, “learn by doing” workshop – an ambitious program where I coach you in the core elements of shooting like a professional. Every aspect will be applied and practiced with your camera so you can take creative control.
A mix of classroom discussion in a comfortable and fun airplane hanger balanced with photography sessions in beautiful locations. We will have the opportunity to photography horses in action, calm horse portraits, western style riders, a professional model with horse, and some other surprises.
I’ve spent an enormous amount of time writing and refining a a workbook for you which explains the most important aspects of using your DSLR to create powerful images. From camera controls to compositional decisions, VISIONS Vol.1 Creative Control: Master your Digital SLR is the most succinct material I know of to help you master your camera. This book is included in the cost of the class and will serve as our reference guide throughout the weekend.
I’m extending my availability to students of this class by offering a follow-up portfolio review. Post-workshop I will review up to ten of your images via email, with detailed notes on the shots and suggestions for how to take your work to the next level. This is a $75-100 value, and is included in the price of this class.
Testimonials
I learned more in your 2 day class than I did in another 5 day class. I really enjoyed the workshop and your easy, hands-on approach to seeing through the eye of the camera. - Rachelle S., San Miguel de Allende
Thanks for a great workshop – I learned a lot! I really appreciate your thoroughness, interesting teaching style, and enthusiasm. If you ever schedule a follow-up workshop here in San Miguel, you can count on me to sign up. – Gail T., San Miguel de Allende
Jak is an outstanding teacher able to clearly explain what one needs to know to create fine images. The balance of in-class talk and in-the-field practice is perfect: the days fly by. The detailed handout is invaluable for future reference. I highly recommend this fun and informative workshop offered by a patient, knowledgeable, enthusiastic photographer! – Sandra S., Mill Valley
The location, class size, and format were perfect. We spent 97% of our time with our camera in hand, not a pen and paper. You explained a key concept or two, how you would use them, why they are important to a photograph and then we went out and practiced… You didn’t tell us the best angle for a photo, you guided us through the decision making process. Just watching you and your approach to the photo subjects was a learning experience in itself… It was a terrific weekend for me. I was sad to see it end. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise but especially for changing my perspective! – Victor C., Sonoma
